Michael Rees Md’s Expertise I am a kidney expert that wears many hats in pursuit of saving lives through kidney donation and transplantation. I am the Surgical Director of Renal Transplantation at the University of Toledo Medical Center and have performed more than 1000 renal transplants. In 2000, my dad, Alan Rees and I designed the first prototype of a computer program to match willing but incompatible donor and recipient pairs for transplantation through kidney paired donation. In 2006, I founded Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation. It is a non-profit organization that works with transplant centers to find matches for incompatible donor and recipient pairs and has grown internationally to also help countries maximize paired donation programs. In 2009, I published a new concept in the New England Journal of Medicine introducing the strategy of Nonsimultaneous Extended Altruistic Donors, which has become the most common method of creating kidney paired donation (KPD) transplants in the United States. I met Professor Alvin Roth at a conference, and he helped us create kidney exchange algorithms. As a result of that work, in part, Professor Roth was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 2012. To recognize my contribution, Professor Roth invited me to join him in Stockholm for the award ceremony, which was an honor of a lifetime. As a principal investigator (PI), my research has resulted in the development of KPD standardized acquisition charges (SAC) models for kidney exchange, and new methods of histocompatibility typing and optimization to improve the selection of donor/recipient pairs in KPD. In 2015, I helped to lead a team to complete the first global kidney exchange transplant in which the mechanism of KPD was used to overcome the barrier of poverty. I co-founded, alongside Professor Al Roth, Rejuvenate Kidney Transplants Solutions to help self-funded companies improve the quality of care for their employees with kidney disease, while simultaneously reducing the cost of such care. In 2021, I was honored to help lead a historical agreement between the Israel and the United Arab Emirates that led to six surgeries for three kidney transplants across the two countries, saving the lives of three women patients. I am thrilled our innovative approaches have been adopted worldwide to produce more than 15,000 additional living donor kidney transplants since 2007. We have many more innovative ideas we are working on to save lives through kidney donation and transplantation. If this excites you too, I'd love to hear from you.
